Sales Introduction

In Australia the most important sales are of yearlings, when horses are around 14 to 22 months old. This is the opportunity for racehorse owners and trainers to buy what they hope will become future champions.Australian thoroughbreds are also sold at weanling sales, breeze up sales (2YO’s who are ready to race), mixed, broodmare and dispersal sales throughout the year, or by private sale. There are two auction companies in Australia who organise and run Australia’s major sales. Catalogues provide a preview of lots and conditions of sale, and can be obtained by contacting the sales companies direct.

Overview of Sales Companies

For more than a century William Inlgis & Son has been selling horses at its Newmarket saleyards just up the hill from Randwick racecourse. And for most of those 100 years, Inglis sold most of the best horses in Australia. While they no longer have the top end of the market to themselves, Inglis still runs the oldest and, in terms of the number of champions sold over the years, most successful yearling sale in the business. The Inglis Easter Yearling Sale is an institution at home and, like the Magic Millions Gold Coast Sale, an increasingly important event for foreign buyers. The Newmarket complex hosts the Easter and Classic Sales, while Oaklands, the Inglis Victorian base, stages the Premier and Autumn Yearling Sales, with both conducting a number of other yearling and mixed sale throughout the year. Inglis is to move to a new site at Warwick Farm racecourse with sales to commence at the new premises in 2019. Inglis’ Oaklands complex is adjacent to Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport approximately 30km north of the Melbourne CBD. The success of the Super VOBIS Scheme in Victoria (Owner and Breeder Incentive Scheme) has contributed to the depth of the racing industry and has added greatly to the appeal of Victorian bred horses sold at Oaklands. Further information on Inglis can be obtained from their website here. (link to

Bloodstock Agents/Private Sales

Buying a horse can be a daunting proposition, but it is one that can be made with expert help. Bloodstock agents are an integral, regulated part of the industry and are available to assist either at a sale or in purchasing a horse privately, giving mating advice, bloodstock valuations, insurance and shipping advice. While there can be no guarantees in selecting and buying a horse, registered bloodstock agents know what they’re looking at and know the procedures. The Federation of Bloodstock Agents Australia Ltd (FBAA) was formed in 1988 to maintain, improve and develop the standards, status and services of bloodstock agents throughout Australia and to present and promote the views of its members. There are currently 26 accredited members, each bound by the Federation's code of ethics and is held to account through a complaints system which gives further assurance of integrity and professionalism. A list of the members of the FBBA can be viewed here.
